Fruit:  Winter-wash fruit trees. Continue planting if soil conditions
are suitable.  If trees are received and soil is not fit for planting,
heel them in  or keep kina frost free place.  Check stakes and ties
on newly planted trees. Continue pruning except when there is
a hard night frost.  Collect and burn prunings and scatter ash
around fruit trees before it becomes damp; red currents and
gooseberries will benefit most. Fell old  trees. Cut newly
planted blackberry, loganberry and hybrid berry bushes down to within 9-12 in of the soil level.  Prune newly planted raspberries hard after planting.
Vegetables: Draw soil around swedes and turnips. During this month or early January, prepare the site for next year's runner beans. Dig a trench 18 in wide and about 12 in deep, loosening the bottom with a fork and covering this with a 3-4 in layer of manure or compost. Over this place 3-4 in of soil and then a further layer of manure before returning the remaining soil.
