Every One a Hero!
Five YGs turned out on Sun 4th November to sow broad
beans and sweet peas and to plant out onions and garlic. It was a filthy
day! Although the heaviest of the rain had relented, streams of water
cascaded down the site from Winton Avenue, paths and beds were flooded,
an icy wind was blowing and the light was fading even by 3:00 pm. We
weren’t
expecting a full turn-out; many had gone away for the half-term holiday.
The five children present worked heroically and carefully and not one
of them mentioned the weather!
We began the afternoon in the Community Hut where we provided the children
with a “goody bag” containing gloves, kneelers, widgers,
dibbers and labels. These together with the pots and compost we used
during the session were the first instalment of a generous donation
of materials and equipment from the Sunshine Garden Centre who will
continue to support us throughout the year. Many thanks to Eamon and
his staff.
Clare supervised the sowing of sweet peas in the Hut. The children
took these home with them to look after until spring. Christiane took
charge of garlic, Stuart helped with onions and Nick with broad beans.
Marc acted as time-keeper and photographer. All the parents present
helped with the work. We dispersed in near darkness soon after 3:30
satisfied after an afternoon’s work in which 346 seeds and sets
had been sown or planted.
