GCAA SHOW ON September 6th, 2009:
We invite you all to come and participate- this is our main fund raising event of the year!

In addition to the SHOWING OF VEGETABLES, FRUIT AND FLOWERS there will be:

a photography competition, teas, books and bric-a-brac, raffles, plant and produce stalls and much much more!

Awards will also be given for best 1/2 plot, best full plot, best newcomers 1/2 plot , best newcomers full plot and best children’s plot. For details please see awards page below.

  • Please remember to return all trophies and shields to Karen Sellars or Trading Shed so they can be made ready for the show
  • We need donations from you all:  cakes for tea, bric-a-brac, books, raffle prizes, tombola prizes, produce and plants on the day, etc....Any donations please leave in trading shed. Thank you!

Rules For Competitors:

RULES FOR COMPETITORS:
Regulations for Exhibitors:
1. All exhibits must be bone fide produce of the exhibitor, and grown by him or her, and must have been in their allotment or garden for at least eight weeks prior to the date of the show. Any person exercising any artifice to deceive the judges or otherwise attempting to gain prizes by unfair means shall forfeit all claims to such prizes as may have been awarded by him/her, and the Committee reserve the right to refuse further entries from such exhibitors.
2. All exhibits must be grouped or arranged according to the directions of the show committee, and no exhibits shall have their positions altered or removed from stands after having been once staged. Each exhibit must be accompanied by the card provided for the purpose, bearing Class Number and the Number of the Exhibitor.
3. No competitor shall be allowed to stage more than one exhibit for any one prize.
4. The decision of the Judges is final. The Committee in consultation with the Judges may withhold any prize in any Class at their discretion. Exhibits will be judged accordingly to the Royal Horticultural Society Show Rules. Protests must be made by 4 pm on Show Day with a deposit of £1.00.
5. All entry forms filled in and accompanied by the total entrance fee, must be in the hands of the Committee before 12 noon on Show day.
6. All exhibits must be staged between 8 am and 12 noon on Show Day. Judging to commence 12.00 noon. Exhibitors must leave shed by 11.30 am!!
7. ENTRY FEES: The entry fee is 20 p for every entry
8. POINTS AND PRIZE MONEY. All prizes will be of the following values, unless otherwise stated and the points will be awarded as follows:

First Prize 4 points 50p
Second Prize 3 points 30p
Third Prize 2 points 20p
Very Highly Commended 1 point 10p

9. COLLECTION OF VEGETABLES.
In staging the collection of vegetables, the number of each kind exhibited must be as shown below. The maximum points obtainable are shown in bold.

10 COLLECTION OF SALAD VEGETABLES-Tomatoes may be included. Quantities as for individual classes. A collection of three salad vegetables in a space not exceeding 1 ft square. .

11. TOP TRAY-Three vegetables selected from Carrots (3), Cauliflower (2), Onions (3), Parsnips(3), Peas(6) Potatoes (3), Runner Beans(6), Tomatoes (6). Internal dimensions of area MUST BE 18” X 24”(45 cm X60 cm). Parsley allowed but no other foliage or accessories. Note Carrots and Parsnips- stalks trimmed to 3 “. Peas and beans- stalks attached. Tomatoes-calyces attached. Each type of vegetable will be judged out of a total of 20 points. This is split into three sections as follows: 7 points for size, shape and colour, 7 points for condition; 6 points for uniformity. The overall mark will therefore be out of a total of 60. A black cloth is permitted and the tray may be painted. Parsley is allowed for garnishing, but no other foliage or accessories, such as plates, sand rings,etc. will be allowed. Onion tips may be tied or whipped using raffia or string. Score card for judges will be supplied.

12. TOP VASE- Vase of mixed flowers containing a total of five to ten stems, taken from a minimum of two different kinds of plants. Please note that it is two different KINDS of plants, not two varieties of the same plant.
The display will be judged out of 35 points, split into :25 points for the colour, form, condition, quality and freshness of the flowers on display; and 10 marks for overall presentation and effect of the flowers in the vase. The vase will be viewed from all directions. Judging of the flowers should be to the normal rules used for other classes. Stems used in the display must be showing flowers only; no seed heads or berries will be allowed. The vase can be any shape and size and made from any material, but must be in proportion to the display. Nor marks are awarded for the vase itself. No accessories whatsoever such as bows and additional foliage will be allowed. Foliage which is growing naturally from the flowering stem, and still attached to that stem is allowed. Packing material-including Oasis- to keep the stems in place is allowed. Score card for judges will be supplied.

13. Plates. (Paper acceptable) required to stage exhibits must be provided by the exhibitor

14. All ordinary care will be taken of exhibits but the Association is unable to accept responsibility for loss or damage.

15. Exhibitors desirous of recovering their exhibits will be allowed to do so when the Show Secretary gives permission. Exhibits kindly left by the Exhibitors will be sold by Auction at the close of the show.

16. All Challenge Cups must be returned in a cleaned and polished condition to the Show Secretary at least 21 days before the date of the Show.

17. Best Plots- Entry to the competition is automatic and there is no entry fee. All plots to be judged on the same day, about 2 weeks before the show, but date will not be notified to plot holders in advance of judging.  On any matter arising, the decision of the Show Secretary shall be final. Three members of the comittee will judge the plots according to the criteria set out below-judges will be selected by the committee. Point system for judging will include cultivation and neatness (30 pts), Veg variety (25 pts), Fruit Variety (10 pts), Flowers (10pts), Compost bin (5pts), Quality/Design Overall (20pts)
Neatness will be judged on: absence of weeds and overgrowth, pruning evidence where appropriate, materials and sheds kept in good order, fencing and divisions used where appropriate; paths well cared for
Variety of produce: a mix of fruit, vegetables and flowers apparent
Evidence of successional planting seen
Design: Good planning and thoughtful design evident; Space for water, and composting allowed for in design; Planning with sun’s direction in mind.

BEST KEPT FULL PLOT: Bonner Memorial Trophy - Awarded to member with best kept full plot- Judged by three committee members at least a week before the show.

BEST KEPT 1/2 PLOT: GCAA Trophy awarded to member with best kept 1/2 plot- Judged by three committee members at least one week before the show

BEST NEWCOMERS FULL PLOT: Awarded to NEW allotment holders ( Within one year) for most improved full plot-Judged by three committee members at least one week before the show

BEST NEWCOMERS 1/2 PLOT; Awarded to NEW allotment holders ( Within one year) for most improved 1/2 plot-Judged by three committee members at least one week before the show

C3. COOKERY ITEM a plate of cookies, biscuits or small cakes, baked by child

C4. VEGETABLE NOVELTY ITEM based on vegetable or fruit made exclusively by the child

C5. MINIATURE GARDEN in container not exceeding 17 X 12 X 3 inches (4-5 cm X 300 cm X 75 cm approx)
